Honestly?
What I don't get is why churchs insist on singing songs about how holy they all are, when in reality our churchs are very sick and most members struggle badly to keep in line with Gods ideals?
Is this lack of honesty with ourselfs hiding the epidemic within us and supressing those who want to be more honest with where they're at in their spiritual walk?
This is why i personally why I prefer music more like Shawn Mc Donald and less like hillsong (not to say it doesn't have a place).
1Co 6:2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?

Any specific song you had in mind?
heh. Often thought things like that myself - why are we so ra ra about getting hold of the unsaved by their grotty, unclean collars and hauling the kicking and screaming into the Kingdom of God when there's a lot of christians who are struggling? Meh. No answers. Maybe the idea of such songs is to get the focus off us and onto God; for a brief respite. Although some of those songs aren't very God-focused, I must say. I'm rambling like a spammer so I'll shut up
Jared - Practically every song we sing in church is about how we're always giving our all for God (everyday, it's you i live for, everyday, I'll follow after you etc.....). However for at least most of us, we struggle through our christianity. Are we brainwashing ourselves that we're giving our all for God?

"My favourite songs are generally those that are either a) focused on God or b) focused on how much I need him. I enjoy the worship at [the church I attend], and think we have a reasonable mix of song types"
- 2nd that.

- I can surely see the point of focussing on the ideal. However in a church that doesn't have a balance or a realisation of how poorly many of us worship in our daily lives, I fear that all those nominal or pseudo-nominal christians come out of church with the feeling that they are Gods gift to.... well, God.

Everyday its you I'll live for...
doesn't this imply that it might be something that we aren't doing but rather something to strive for...:D
I really am beginning to appreciate Westchurch in this regard. So many churches these days discard songs that are older than 2 years old in order to keep church hip and relevant. (Excuse me while I go hurl into the garden...
okay I'm back.) At Westchurch we generally don't sing songs newer than 1990 except for a few. Most of them have really inspirational words.
Yar yar, Ilam kicks ass in that regard too! It took me ages to figure out the worship there because it's erm... not always that pretty-sounding... & they sing some whacked out songs - but they choose the songs for the words & the message in them, so we've ended up with this really eclectic mix of goodness. A lot of the old hymns kick ass ay.
